Legal Graffiti Is Real and We Are Absolutely Here for It!
Okay, so I have been saying the phrase "legal graffiti" out loud basically every chance I get lately, and I just realized I have never actually written a blog post about it. Which is kind of embarrassing because it might be one of my favorite things about what we do here at Chalk Ink®. So anyway, here we go. Bear with me because I feel like this is going to go a few different directions before we land the plane.
You Can Write on Pretty Much Anything
Here is the thing that trips people up when they first hear about our markers. They think chalk ink means chalkboard. Like, that is the whole world. And I totally get it because the name does kind of suggest that. But what we have figured out over the years is that our markers work on basically any non-porous surface you can think of, and you can get them back off again. We are talking about dumpsters, windows, doors, refrigerators, appliances, computer screens, and TV screens. Yes, I did just say TV screens. You can write on your TV screen.
And it was like, once we started realizing the full range of what people were doing with these things, that is when the phrase "legal graffiti" started feeling really right. Because that is genuinely what it is. You are out there tagging surfaces with your big bold colors and your wild neons and your purples and your bright greens, and then when you are done or when it rains, it just comes off. No damage. No drama. Just legal graffiti.
The Porous Surface Thing (Because I Always Have to Mention It)
Okay, I do have to be upfront about one thing because otherwise I get emails about it, and I understand why. If you write on something porous, like paper or sheetrock, our markers behave more like a permanent marker. So the legal graffiti magic is specifically for non-porous surfaces. Glass, metal, plastic, that kind of thing. Write on a window? Comes off! Write on a cardboard box? That is staying! Just wanted to put that out there because I think it matters, and honestly, it is kind of a fascinating material science thing if you think about it. Which I do think about. Probably too much.
45 Colors and the Naming Thing
So we have 45 colors in our 15mm markers right now, and I am genuinely proud of every single one of them. Neons, metallics, the colors with the completely unhinged names that I love so much. We named them like that on purpose because here is something I have learned from years of doing this: people remember things when they make them laugh or when they feel a little personal. Smiley Face Yellow is just a better name than Yellow Number 4 or whatever. And it works. People come back and ask for Smiley Face Yellow by name, and it makes my whole day every single time.
The color range we have built is genuinely something I love talking about and I am trying to get better at not boring people at parties with it. So anyway.
The Safety Marker Side of Things, Because Yes That Is Also Legal Graffiti
This is the part I really wanted to make sure I talked about because it does not always get the attention it deserves. We also make safety markers, and those are absolutely legal graffiti too, just in a completely different context. We have been talking with FEMA and emergency safety crews about the different ways these can be used in the field, and honestly, some of the conversations we have had are pretty incredible.

First responders can use them to mark things quickly and clearly in situations where that really matters, and the markers hold up outside and can be removed when they are no longer needed.
In the trades and construction world, they work great for marking toolboxes, water buckets, equipment, and surfaces that need to be labeled on a job site. It is not the art world version of legal graffiti, but it is absolutely the same idea. You are marking something clearly and temporarily, and then you move on. That is a genuinely useful thing in a lot of different industries, and I feel like we are still in the early days of figuring out all the places it can go.
Springtime and Going Outside with Markers
Okay, here is my actual closing thought, and it is a simple one. It is spring. It is warming up. There are surfaces outside that are just sitting there being boring and non-porous. Even if you wrote a giant smiley face on a dumpster in the alley behind your building, the rain would eventually take it off. You would have made the neighborhood a little more fun for a while. You would have committed no crimes. You would have done legal graffiti.
I think that is kind of beautiful, and I think more people should try it. We have 45 colors waiting for you, and they all have ridiculous names, and I would love to hear what you do with them!
Still figuring out how to end blog posts gracefully, so I will just say thanks for reading and go write something on a window.
