Summer Is Not a Slow Season, It's a Setup Season
Okay so I have to admit something. Every single summer I tell myself I am going to slow down a little, catch my breath, maybe do one of those things normal people do where they actually take a vacation. And then every single summer I end up doing approximately the opposite of that, because the closer I get to Q4, the more I start thinking about all the retailers out there who are either going to walk into the fall fully prepared or absolutely scrambling, and I genuinely cannot help myself from wanting to get on a soapbox about it.
Summer is a setup season. Not a slow season. Not a time to coast. A setup season, and there is a real difference.
The Back of the House Is Begging You
I talk to retailers all the time, and I mean all kinds of retailers. Baristas at Starbucks, teams at Chick-fil-A who are out there making picnic lunches and trying to keep things moving during the summer rush, people at Nordstrom who are elbow deep in back stock trying to get organized before the holiday freight starts rolling in at the end of the summer. And the thing that almost all of them have in common is that the back of the house is kind of a disaster, and everyone knows it, and nobody has touched it yet because the floor has been too busy.
Summer is the moment. That is the window. Because once September hits and the holiday buying season starts pulling everyone in a hundred directions at once, there is no time to stop and reorganize. You are just in it, and you are going to be working with whatever toolkit you have, in whatever state it is in, for the next four months.
So the question is, what do you want that toolkit to look like?
Fresh Supplies Are Not a Luxury, They Are a Strategy
This is something I feel strongly about and I know it sounds like I am just trying to sell you markers, but I promise this comes from years of watching retailers try to execute their best season with dried out, half used, wrong color supplies that they have been hanging onto since last fall.
Your Chalk Ink® markers need to be fresh. Full stop. If you have been using the same set since the holidays and you are going into another Q4 with whatever is left at the bottom of that box, you are going to feel it. The tip gets ragged, the color goes dull, and the whole thing starts to feel like a drag when it should feel like a creative tool.
Stock up now. You can find us at amazon.com, chalkink.com, and through Staples B2B, which is Staples Advantage if you are ordering for a business and want to keep it on account. Get fresh colors, get the sizes you actually need, and while you are at it, let me tell you about something that I think a lot of retailers genuinely do not know we make.
Honey Girl Yellow Is Going to Be Your Fall Secret Weapon
Okay so we have this color called Honey Girl Yellow and I am a little bit obsessed with it. It is this warm, rich, beautiful golden yellow that is absolutely perfect for rolling into back to school season and the fall, and I feel like it flies under the radar because people default to their whites and their neons when they are doing seasonal signage. But this color has a warmth to it that just reads as autumn before you even write a single letter.
Think about your fall window displays. Think about your seasonal specials boards, your pumpkin spice everything announcements, your harvest themed promotions. Honey Girl Yellow is going to make all of that look so much more intentional and so much less like you grabbed whatever was in the supply closet. It is a beautiful color and it is sitting right there on our site waiting for you to discover it. So go discover it.
Your Emergency Toolkit Deserves a Real Moment of Attention
Here is the part where I genuinely want you to stop and think about something that most people put off until they absolutely need it and then panic because they do not have it. Your safety supplies. Your emergency management toolkit in the back of the house.
We make safety markers and I want to talk about them for a second because they are one of those products that you do not think about until you desperately need them and then you are very glad they exist. They come in Laser Blue, Caution Orange, and White, and they are bright, fluorescent, unmistakable. They are made for the moments when something goes sideways and you need to communicate quickly and clearly with your customers or your team.
Construction happening near your entrance? You need to redirect foot traffic. Write an arrow on the floor, write on the window, tell people where to go and what to expect. Sorry for the inconvenience, come this way, watch your step. Our safety markers write on dumpsters, on fire extinguishers, on vehicles, on any surface where you need something to be seen immediately and understood immediately. Every retailer should have at least a few of these in the back of the house, and summer is the perfect time to make sure they are there and they are fresh.
The Window That Actually Sells Something
And then there is the fun part, which is using summer to experiment with your Chalk Ink® markers on all the seasonal signage you have been meaning to do but have not gotten around to because things have been busy. Because here is the thing about summer, and this is coming from someone who has watched retail trends for a long time now, the customers who are walking past your window in July are hot and they are looking for a reason to come in. Give them one.
Write on your window. Tell them what is cold and fresh and wait for them inside. Write it big and bright and with actual personality. Something like "Fresh today, come on in, one for you and one for your friend" on the window of a coffee shop or a juice bar or a fast casual spot is going to stop people in a way that a printed sign just does not. There is something about handwritten chalk marker signage that feels personal and immediate and alive, and that feeling translates directly into foot traffic and sales.
That is the name of the game, right? We are all here to move products and create experiences that bring people back. Summer is the time to practice, to experiment, to figure out what works in your windows and on your boards, so that when Q4 comes and the stakes are higher and the margins are thinner and everyone is exhausted, you already know exactly what you are doing.
So Anyway
Get organized. Stock up on fresh supplies. Grab some Honey Girl Yellow and get excited about fall. Make sure you have safety markers in the back. And then go write something on your window that makes someone stop and smile and walk through your door.
